Manchester United won their first major title since 2017, beating Newcastle United in the Carabao Cup final at Wembley.
Newcastle’s quest for the trophy, which dates back to 1969, continues with two goals in six minutes in the first half, giving Manchester United the lead and their first success under Erik ten Haga.
Casemiro opened the deadlock in the 33rd minute with a header from Luke Shaw’s free-kick and his side doubled the lead after Sven Botman deflected Marcus Rashford’s shot past Newcastle goalkeeper Loris Karius to replace Nick Pope, who was disqualified .
Newcastle tried to cash in after the break but goals ran out at the wrong time for Eddie Howe’s men.
It meant Manchester United were back at the top after their last success six years ago when they won the Europa League under Jose Mourinho and also won that competition in the same season.
