It turns out that Diddy was not actually paying Sting’s bills as he had claimed. The rapper had previously stated that he was paying $5,000 per day in royalties to Sting for the use of a sample of “Every Breath You Take” in his 1997 song “I’ll Be Missing You”.

However, Diddy has now clarified on Twitter that it was all a joke and that he and Sting have been friends for a long time. According to Diddy, Sting had never charged him $3,000 or $5,000 a day for the sample.

In fact, Sting likely earns much more than $5,000 a day from one of the biggest songs in history.

“I want y’all to understand I was joking! It’s called being Facetious! Me and @OfficialSting have been friends for a long time! He never charged me $3K or $5K a day for Missing You. He probably makes more than $5K a day from one of the biggest songs in history.” The American rapper, Diddy wrote on Twitter Friday, April 7.

Diddy’s hit song “I’ll Be Missing You” was a tribute to the late Notorious B.I.G. and featured a sample of Sting’s “Every Breath You Take”. However, Diddy did not ask for permission to use the sample until after the song was released. Both Diddy and Sting have spoken about the situation in the past, and in a 2018 interview with The Breakfast Club, Sting stated that he received $2,000 a day from Diddy for the sample.

Recently, a clip of the interview resurfaced on Twitter, prompting Diddy to respond by claiming that he actually paid Sting $5,000 a day.

It’s clear that there are no hard feelings between Diddy and Sting, as the two musicians are good friends. In fact, in a 2018 interview, Sting described Diddy’s use of his song in “I’ll Be Missing You” as a beautiful version.

However, Sting did confirm in a 2003 interview with Rolling Stone that the uncleared sample has generated a significant amount of money for him, and probably much more since then.

Despite the legal issues surrounding the use of the sample, Sting’s friend Elton John had encouraged him to listen to the song, predicting that he would become a millionaire twice over. Sting acknowledged that he had already made millions and had even put his kids through college with the proceeds. Nevertheless, he and Diddy remain good friends to this day.
